At Digital-Tutors, we’ve found that many people starting out creating models in 3ds Max have some difficulty in creating the specific vision they have. In many cases it’s not necessarily a lack of knowledge of the tools as much as it is a lack of confidence and experience. So, to give you a head start on your modeling, we’ve put together a number of tips collected from production and from teaching students that will help you build the best models you can with minimal frustration.

We’ll begin this course by talking about breaking down our modeling projects into smaller pieces. We’ll cover methods for staying aware of as much information as possible about our geometry while we work. We’ll cover specific techniques for adding circular resolution to square objects and go over setting up Viewport Backgrounds. This course is meant for students that have some modeling experience and are familiar with the tools but would like a few tips for creating a smoother workflow and getting better results.

In this course we are going to help you get a good understanding of how to work in 3ds Max.You will be able to learn from several of the instructors here at Digital Tutors as we go through many of the major parts of the software. We are going to cover a wide range of topics in this course. We will start out exploring the user interface and finding our way around 3ds Max. Then we will start to create our own custom model, a pod racer, using a number of powerful modeling tools. We will paint and texture our model, and then take it through the process of rigging and animation. We will finish up by adding dynamic effects to the scene and rendering out a nice result. Once you are finished, you will have exposure to a wide range of disciplines in 3ds Max and be able to start working on your own projects and building on the knowledge you have gained.

Module 1 - Starting

This first module contains 70 high resolution videos running 2.9 hours overall. I explain each concept and technique using 3ds Max 8 and/or VIZ 2007, which are essentially the same program (VIZ is a streamlined version of Max). You'll learn about the user interface and how to customize it, setting units properly, saving a prototype, creating and transforming objects, how to manage, display, and navigate within viewports, how to select like a pro, manage layers, control object display, and how to use grid, snap, and autosnap productively.
Due to the subject matter, this module focuses more on essential concepts, rather than on tutorials that have you building things--you'll work on projects in later modules once you have solid foundation skills.

Module 2 - Basic Modeling

This module contains 79 high resolution videos running 4.2 hours overall. I explain each concept and technique using 3ds Max 8 and/or VIZ 2007, which are essentially the same program (VIZ is a streamlined version of Max). The videos are captured right off my screen and you can hear my audio commentary.
You'll learn geometric essentials: how to work with pivot points, reference coordinate systems, transform centers, cloning, the array and mirror tools, plus you'll gain valuable alignment skills.
The module includes two mini projects where you'll apply what you learn by modeling two chairs - one with primitives and the other using modifiers. Additional topics include grouping, modifier essentials, parametric modifiers, free form deformations, selection and transform modifiers.
The order that the topics are introduced is carefully planned to deliver concepts just as you need them, making 3ds Max & VIZ modeling techniques much easier to comprehend.

Module 3 - Advanced Modeling

This module contains 138 high resolution videos running 8.8 hours overall. I explain each concept and technique using 3ds Max 8, Max 9 and/or VIZ 2007. The videos are captured right off my screen and you can hear my audio commentary.
Learn how to model almost anything you can imagine with this module. Here you'll gain advanced modeling skills that empower you to sculpt splines, patches, mesh and polygonal geometry, NURBS, and AEC objects into the myriad forms of real world architectural objects.
Numerous tutorials take you step by step through the creation of many object types including: custom made walls, windows, and doors, plus pottery, light fixtures, moldings, chairs, tables, curtains, sinks, stairs, railings, landforms, rocks, roads, 3D logos, and mechanical objects.
See how compound objects are more than the sum of their parts and how you can even use 3ds Max (not possible in VIZ) to realistically depict 3D fabrics and tensile membranes (garment maker, cloth, and HSDS modifiers), grass (particle flow or hair and fur), and simulate real world physical interactions between objects under the pull of gravity (with reactor).

Learn how to use the material editor, browser, palettes, and navigator to craft realistic looking textures. This module will teach you everything you need to know to master materiality in 3ds Max and VIZ.
Numerous step by step tutorials walk you through complex concepts such as shaders, material components, maps, mapping channels, and assigning texture coordinates. Learn how to store alpha channels in your bitmaps and use them to create convincing image-based architectural entourage such as trees, plants, people, and cars.

Vale, no es un efecto 3D auténtico pero hay que reconocer que el mayor mérito de Palm Top Theater es su simpleza en relación al efecto conseguido. El accesorio consiste básicamente en tres láminas de plástico que se colocan en ángulo de 45 grados con la pantalla del iPhone, resultando en un escenario con tres capas de profundidad por el que los elementos se superponen,



Desarrollado por Jitsuro Mase y Tom Nagae, i3DG funciona (mejor dicho, se puede acoplar) al iPhone 3G y iPod Touch y se puede utilizar en aplicaciones, vídeos y juegos.

In this tutorial, Ramy Hanna covers the funadamentals of creating iridescent materials in 3ds Max. Iridescence is an optical phenomenon in which hue changes depending on the angle at which it is being viewed. Iridescence can be seen in cds, shells and bubbles. Ramy starts with a reflective material and details how he uses Max's Shellac material to create a three channel material that accurately recreates the optical effect of iridescence.

3DS Max Texturing with Arch & Design Mental Ray Materials
Ramy Hanna, goes through texturing 9 different materials with the Arch & Design shader through Mental Ray for 3ds Max 2009. He covers materials such as plastic, cloth, chrome, glass, concrete, brick and wood all in this 60 minute tutorial. This tutorial is a must for anyone needing a crash course on architectural texturing. Materials covered are: plastic, cloth, chrome, glass, concrete, brick, painted walls, and wood.

Lighting Interior Spaces

FumeFX is a fluid dynamics engine designed for simulation and rendering of realistic fire, smoke, explosion and other gaseous phenomena.
It’s versatility, robustness and intuitive workflow makes it a perfect solution for the most demanding tasks in the computer graphics industry. Almost every aspect of simulation can be customized through 3ds max scripting, allowing user to interfere with simulation computation at the lowest level.

What’s New in 2.1a

- FumeFX now supports fully interactive simulations. This means that user can change almost every parameter during the simulation and see it’s influence on the simulation result. It is even possible to change channels that will be saved to the output file, or to move objects and change their parameters.

- Version 2.1 introduces Variable Density solver that uses smoke density and temperature as variables. The result of this addition is increased physical realism, where cold air and dense smoke will have stronger inertia compared to the hot air and lower density smoke.

- New is also the CFL condition parameter that directly controls the number of simulation steps. This is the value that defines the maximum distance allowed for any cell data (velocity, smoke, fire, etc..) to travel in one simulation step. If velocities are bigger then defined by this condition, simulation sub steps will be initiated.

- New Advanced advection scheme that reduces dissipation.

- Default simulation uses all cores during the Wavelet Turbulence calculations, which results in significant speedup.

- finalRender 3.5 Global Iiiumination is now up to 6x faster !

- Preview Window now prints out 3ds max frame number.

- Added ability to stop/continue Retimer.

- Various bug fixes from eariler versions.
New in 2.0

Wavelet Turbulence mode: Allows users to add extra detail to low resolution simulations.

Post processing: Gives users the ability to tighten (shrink) the FumeFX grid as much as possible around smoke and fire to limit memory consumption.

Retiming: Lets users slow down and speed up their simulation caches.

Fuel-specific weight parameter: This parameter allows you to increase weight of the fuel causing it to be directly affected by the gravity.

Temperature can now control where fire creates smoke. When temperature is above a set threshold, smoke will be added to the grid.

New FumeFX_Burn WSM: Allows you to affect your mesh’s vertex color based on FumeFX values.

Turbulence and Forces are now visible inside the viewport even if grid is not simulated.

New Void Source: This helper will erase all the fields inside or outside of it (depending on the settings).

The FumeFX Object Source helper now can handle multiple objects

The FumeFX Particle Source helper now uses AfterBurn style controls.

New FumeFX Source: You can now use one FumeFX source as the source for another FumeFX simulation.

Auto Synchronize Paths option now added to Global FumeFX Preferences so that when you change the Delault Output path, any Wavelet Turbulence, Retiming and Preview Window paths will be changed automatically as well.

In the Preferences dialog, you can change Presets folder.

The FumeFX Preview Window will now update if you rotate the active viewport.

You can now change the Preview path from within the FumeFX UI

You now have the option to choose the codec for the FumeFX Preview Window. Note: some codecs will not be suitable and will generate an error. (e.g. – DivX requires that you increase default width of PW)

The Velocity channel added to the list of FusionWorks Render Elements.

This release of thinkingParticles is not only about adding complete new nodes, it is also about enhancing existing nodes, which offer extended benefits, as completely new nodes are expected to do.

The following existing thinkingParticles Nodes have been changed/enhanced
Intersect Node:
This node received new inputs and outputs to enhance its functionality.
New Inputs: Particle Shape, UVW Channel
New Outputs: Object Position, Face ID, Face Coordinates

One To X:
A new more generalized data stream concept has been introduced to this helper node
New: the Type of data stream connected and output can now be selected

Surface Pos Node:
New inputs have been added to this node to enhance its functionality
New Inputs: UVW, Particle Shape

Volume Pos Node:
By adding a new input to this node, particle shapes can now be used to define the volume for placing or generating particles.
New Input: Particle Shape

OP_ObjToParticle:
A new object state has been introduced to this node, the “No tracking” option will not use any transformation information at all, except position.
New Selection Option: Initial Velocity
“None” now really does NO tracking at all

Get Reference Operator: by adding a new Number of Refs output, it is now possible to request the total number of references which a particle possesses.
