Renderizando un exterior en la noche en 5 simples pasos, usando vray

In this tutorial I will go through all the steps that we usually do when I’m asked to do an “exterior night-rendering”.
In order to follow it you need to know the basics of 3ds max and vray.

1) Natural light
The first step is to choose a background image of a sky.
For this tutorial I have used the image bellow:

Now put the desired image into the environment slot (3d max’s environment slot, not in vray’s).
In the vray settings, check global illumination, select lightcache for secondary bounces, irradiance map for primary (you could also use brute force, but it will take longer to render).
In the global switches tab, make sure that “default lights” is unchecked.

Last but not least go to the vray environment slot and check “GI environment (skylight) override. In the slot right beside put a gradient (dark blue in the upper slot, a lighter blue in the middle and a pale orange or purple in the lower position)

If you hit render, you will end up with something like this:

2) Adding artificial lights inside
As you notice, it is starting too look like a night rendering, but at the moment it lacks artificial lighting so the spaces look deserted.

We will begin by adding vray lights inside the house, to simulate artificial lighting.
The important thing to keep in mind at this point is that artificial light can look different from one case to another depending on many factors (intensity, color temperature, size of the space that is actually lit, etc.) so you shouldn’t put a light source and instance it all over the place. Be creative and play with parameters like intensity multipliers, filter colors, etc.
For this scene I have used spherical vray lights with intensity multipliers varying from 1 to 2, filter colors with orange, yellow and blue tints and different a radius for each one.

If you hit another render you will end up with something very similar to the following.

3) Simulating artificial light “spreading” from inside
Now we have light inside the house, but the light doesn’t seem to “come out” enough. Therefore we will place vray planar lights just in front of the windows, pointing towards the exterior, like in the following image.

Hit another test rendering and you should have something similar to the render bellow:

4) Adding artificial lights in the courtyard
We are getting closer. What doesn’t look right at the moment is the fact that the courtyard is too dark. Depending on your scene, you may have exterior lighting fixtures (like the lighting posts that I have in this scene), or even exterior spotlights that illuminate the building. If you don’t have specific instructions for these, you could place lights somewhere behind the camera, so that you give the impression that the space is receiving illumination from neighboring sources (street lights, car lights, or even other buildings).

In this particular scene, adding lights to the lighting small garden lighting posts should be enough.
First I have assigned them a vraylight material with a gradient map; than I have placed vray spherical lights over each one. For each vray light in the courtyard I have excluded the lighting post bellow it. This is kind of a fake, but in the end it looks right, and that’s all that matters. (If you want to do it more “accurate” check out the lampshade tutorial as well).

Hitting a test render at this stage you should obtain something like this:

5) Photoshop touches
a) Add a subtle glow effect to the visible artificial light sources (in this case, the small lighting posts). You can do this using the diffuse glow filter.
b) In a new layer, add a linear gradient from bottom to somewhere at the middle from orange to transparent. Put the layer on “color” and play with the transparency until you like the result. If you are feeling creative, you can also try some subtle brush strokes, with different tints of red, yellow or orange to create diversity.
After having done all of the above, here is the final image.

Conclusion
Rendering an exterior at night can be very tricky. The best approach in my opinion is to take it systematically by starting with natural light, and adding artificial lights one by one during the process. Otherwise, you may find yourself lost not knowing where you did something wrong.
I can not stress enough how important is to have a few examples of professional architectural photography at hand and look at them at every stage of the process.
Here are some general guidelines that I always keep in mind when I’m doing a night rendering:

1) Even at night time the skylight still casts a subtle shadow.
2) Never make the sky 100% black; it should have either a blue or a purple tint.
3) If there are no artificial lights on the ground, the sky will always be brighter and the ground would “borrow” a bluish or purple tint from the sky
4) The lighting is a mixture of dark purple/bluish tints at the upper part and orange/yellow on the ground and on the building(s). That is because the natural light blends with artificial light sources placed on the ground.
5) The colors are more saturated in a night rendering that in a daytime one.
6) Artificial light sources have a subtle glow around them.
7) If you have “moving objects” in your scene, don’t be afraid to use motion blur. If you know a bit about photography, you are aware that at night time photographers use high exposure times when they target architectural subjects; this causes all moving things around (cars, people, etc) to appear with motion blur.

El complejo de afecto "Love 2D" aqueja a varias personas en oriente y los obliga a entablar relaciones amorosas con personajes imaginarios con los que salen a comer o a divertirse

Nisan de 37 años de edad, originiario de Japón, lleva aparentemente una vida normal. Sin embargo, su aspecto emocional no esta del todo bien, ya que después de fracasar en el amor, decidió entablar una relación amorosa con Nemu, un personaje de anime impreso en una almohada; publica BoingBoing.com.

La relación entre Nisan y su almohada ha sido calificada de enfermiza, fetichista y es poco agradable ante los ojos de los japoneses, país donde se suelen llevar este tipo de relaciones a las que han llamado "Love 2d" o "Amor en dos dimensiones". Él pasea con su "novia" imaginaria en el cine, teatro, acuden a comer; siendo el trabajo el único lugar a donde no está con ella.

De acuerdo a estudios realizados en el país nipón, el auge de estas relaciones imaginarias con personajes de caricaturas japonesas, se debe a que el 50% de la población de este país no tiene relación con personas del sexo opuesto, y que una cuarta parte de ellos, mayores de 30 años, siguen siendo virgenes, añade The New York Times.

Otras personas creen que el afecto en 2D se ha generado en los denominados "otakus", personas obsesionadas con todo lo que ocurre en el mundo del manga, anime y videojuegos japoneses.

Nisan al igual que otros hombres y mujeres que practican esta actividad extrema, se siente comprometido emocionalmente con Nemu, por quien dice sentir un verdadero amor. Las relaciones ficticias se han convertido en una actividad recurrente y una escapatoria fácil entre la juventud japonesa; incluso existen personas casadas que lo llevan a cabo y no temen ser juzgadas por su comportamiento "anormal".

El futuro amoroso de Nisan es incierto, aunque de acuerdo a The New York Times, espera un día casarse con una mujer de carne y hueso, que acepte a Nemu y puedan vivir felices los tres.

Robot que pinta las paredes de la casa

Hasta hace poco más de un mes tenía una cocina antigua y poco atractiva que nadie había renovado desde hace cuarenta años. Lo cierto es que más allá de que lucía fuera de moda era cómoda y luminosa, fue por eso que decide renovarla con mis propias manos pues soy de las que disfrutan de los trabajos artesanales.

Y así fue como trabajé en ella durante semanas hasta renovarla por complete. Quedó muy bonita por cierto pero a pesar de los buenos resultados creo que no repetiré la experiencia, al menos no sin ayuda. Porque fueron días y días en los que permanecí sobre una escalera y realizando grandes esfuerzos físicos. De saber que existía algo como el robot Snail creo me hubiera ocupado de comprarlo antes de iniciar la refacción.

Robot que pinta las paredes de la casa

Diseñado por Yasunori Goto, Ibe Tommokichi, Hirata Ichiro este pequeño androide ayuda a la hora de pintar las superficies verticals dado que puede pegarse a las paredes gracias a un sistema de aire comprimido. El dispositivo debe conectarse a una toma eléctrica y cuenta con un sistema de control de información que permite guiar al robot para que limpie las paredes, las pinte y hasta tome fotografías!

No hay nada peor que una mudanza, nada más aburrido y complicado. Porque siempre terminan por tomarnos más días de los pensados. Ni hablar de la cantidad de cajas que demanda. Aún cuando sintamos que tenemos poca ropa y sólo unos pocos muebles son siempre más de 10 entre objetos de cocina, libros, prendas de vestir y esos objetos que trasladamos a cada hogar nuevo sin saber bien porque. Y eso que durante el proceso nos deshacemos de algunas cosas que, sabemos, no usaremos jamás

Las mudanzas serían muy diferentes si en un abrir y cerrar de ojos uno pudiera tener la casa armada. ¿Un sueño imposible? Parece que no, sobre todo desde que existe The Push Button House, un concepto de casa-container que se abre como una flor con sólo apretar un botón.

Un sistema hidráulico es el responsable de la hazaña, una verdadera proeza teniendo en cuenta que una vez instalada dispone de todo lo necesario para vivir y muebles de calidad.

Pensada por el arquitecto Adam Kalkin, esta insólita vivienda ha sido diseñada con materiales reciclados.

¿Cómo se sentirá una catarata de lluvia en los hombros? Si no hablamos de un Tsunami puede que la sensación sea agradable, sobre todo si hablamos de una plácida ducha con agua caliente.

De alguna manera la firma Dornbracht ha pensado un revolucionario concepto de ducha para la firma Gunni & Trentino y el resultado es Rainsky, un fantástico modelo que acusa una perfecta cortina de agua que cae en forma continua y regular sobre la persona que se está bañando.

Porque no hay nada más feo que una ducha con poco agua la firma ha pensado este modelo para ser empotrado en el techo. De esta forma el usuario disfrutará de un importante caudal de agua que ofrece gran intensidad. Rainsky dispone de un termostado llamado xTool que regula la intensidad del agua así como de la luz integrada y del aroma que la ducha puede desprender al ser utilizada.

Sin dudas, genial. Un verdadero baño de placer cada día de nuestras vidas.

3D Total Next Gen Texturing Techniques 3DS Max 2009 | 1.7GB

In this demonstration the instructor starts off by explaining the very fundamentals of using Photoshop for texturing. From there he goes into depth on how to set up your high res and low res meshes for rendering Normal, AO, and other Maps.

Once the scene and basics have been defined it’s on to the entire texturing process of the self contained scene. Everything from the Diffuse, to Spec, Normal, and even a little Emissive and Alpha Maps.
The Main textures created are a Concrete Texture set, Wood, Cloth, Grass, Ground, and Metal.
This video has almost 5 hours of teaching and demonstration that will serve as the ultimate texturing resource.
